What’s the Deal with Peer-to-Peer Rental?
Peer-to-peer (p2p) rental is a trending way of shopping. Instead of purchasing a used item from an online marketplace or buying brand-new from a retail store, you rent the item(s)! So, p2p rental is exciting because you are helping those around you, being polite to the environment, and earning some cash!
Neighbors, neighbors’ family, tourists, and the not mentioned are looking for items to help them make their daily activities easier or more enjoyable.
Grandma Rita may be watching her grandchildren for the weekend and wants to have toys around. The kids don’t spend enough time at her house for her to justify spending retail pricing and storing it all away. Instead, Rita can now rent toys for those couple days from a family close by, this saves her time, money, and space.
There is also John searching for a drone to capture amazing aerial views on his next vacation with his wife. Instead of purchasing the drone for $500-$800, John is able to rent it for a few days and pay far less than retail, or even buying used.
Shane is an aspiring film maker and wants to create a short but doesn’t have all the necessary video equipment. Luckily for Shane, he can rent a mic stick, camera stabilizer and another camera for multiple angles. Without p2p rentals, Shane would have to purchase new equipment, John would have to buy a drone for a one-time use, and Grandma Rita would have to store away toys that the kids may outgrow by the next visit. P2P renting clearly can have a positive impact on the lives of those within our communities. When you rent your musical equipment, it may not be to a street performer stranger, that guy may be the next Ed Sheeran. :D
Global warming may or not be of a concern to you, this is fine. There is the fact that production of new goods leaves behind a chemical nightmare for Mother Earth and wildlife. Almost all consumer product production leads to increased “pollutant emissions, increased land-use and deforestation (Greentumble, 2019)”. Product production plays a negative role in retail goods, as does packaging.
There is a lot of waste in paper and plastic because of packaging a product to pretty it up and keep it in mint condition until it arrives home. Renting an item reduces the amount of paper and plastic fillers and bags that will ultimately find their way into water sources and the homes of wildlife. Beyond the plastics in the wildlife, that of its that makes it to recycling still takes energy to recycle the plastic. Plastic recycling is a very unclean process.
